While every individual worth his salt may advise others of being clear about their goals and objectives in life, in real-life situations, that seldom is true. There are a significant number of people around the world who change careers or at least think of doing so at some point in their life. Career change refers to finding a completely new industry, new position and a new set of responsibilities.

While finding a new career is relatively easy for those just starting out, it can be a stressful affair for those facing a mid-life crisis. Nevertheless, career change requires planning and preparation to ensure that you do not go through a mental or a physical breakdown. Here are 5 tips to keep in mind for those planning to change careers that could help them tide over this sensitive phase in life with confidence.

1) Network well

Before you decide to jump careers, it is a good idea to have a good network to dig into. Use Linkedin, Facebook and other social networking sites to interact with the right people at your present workplace and invest your time in building relations that will help in your new career path. Building a good network is essential for ensuring that you don’t have to wait long to find yourself a job in a new industry.

2) Take care of your financial health

When you go in for a career change, be prepared to wait for some time. To ensure that you are comfortable during the waiting period, plan things in such a way that you have an adequate financial cushion to keep you at ease. So, once you have decided to switch careers, start saving and make a monthly budget for yourself. If you are comfortable in the transition period, you will find it way easier to stick to your plans and move into a new career.

Many people don’t pay heed to the financial factor and have to bear the brunt of going broke, which in most cases leads to change of plans and ambitions.

3) Acquaint yourself

It is important that once you have decided to move into a new industry and a new role, etc., you acquaint yourself with the responsibilities of a new job. This could involve going in for training courses in the relevant field or adding to your educational qualifications. For example, for somebody wanting to move from the field of software designing to a position of marketing in an IT firm, it is a good idea to acquaint yourself with the latest in the field of marketing and maybe undergo a short term training course in the same field.

4) Be patient and positive

A career change, most times, will take some time. Be patient and positive and try to focus on the job at hand. Do not try to rush into things, because change is always gradual. Rushing into things can make a perfectly good situation bad for you. Although it is human tendency to get the things you desire immediately, you need to be patient with your career, else you can ruin it. Also, it is important that you stay optimistic.

5) Have a backup plan

This is critical. Many times, things don’t go as we plan. For example, something that you thought would be enjoyable may not turn out to be as enjoyable; or you may encounter unfavorable circumstances that could force you to drop your plans for the time being. Be prepared to face this unpredictability of life. Have a backup plan so that you don’t have to go through misery and despair. This could mean having an alternate career option or going back to the same job that you once had.

With this career change information, you will surely be able to go through your career transition phase fruitfully without facing any disappointments.
