It’s that time of year again when thoughts invariably turn to fresh starts, pay rises and career development plans. According to research undertaken by
Bulletpoint, one of the main drivers for a change of job is getting stale.
As Senior Managers, in this market where arguably employers have more choice than ever before how do you market yourself effectively – and what questions should you be asking yourself?
Changing jobs requires lots of thought and introspection. Asking the following questions can help guide the process:
- Is the timing right i.e. will a similar opportunity come up again?
- What will be the impact on partner and kids?
Is changing jobs actually going to advance your career, provide meaningful growth opportunities, maximise learning?
- How well will you adapt to a new environment?
- What is necessary to maintain a career path and a vision for the future; have you defined long term career objectives?
If you do decide that now is the time then this is what employers will be looking for
- Tie your accomplishments to the business: Show connection to the company’s strategic business direction
- Show results that are measurable: Talk about £’s saved, processes improved, customer/employee satisfaction results
- Demonstrate patterns of success: Highlight consistent strengths and achievements
- Come across as a business person: Talk in terms of revenues, business goals, performance standards, return on investment
- Search for the right fit: Try to determine the organisation’s tone - e.g. collegial/competitive, matrix/hierarchical; different industries have different managerial styles.
The bottom line is how you show value. Demonstrate this and you’ll be considered an asset wherever you go.
