What is CNC?

Computer numerical control (CNC) is a term that people in most of walks have never heard of and yet CNC has touched almost every form of manufacturing process in one way or another. Whilst there are exceptions to this statement, CNC machines typically replace (or work in conjunction with) existing manufacturing processes.

Take for example, a simple task like drilling holes. An operator can place a drill in a chuck secured to a spindle, select the desired drill speed and manually drill a hole. This may be acceptable for low manufacturing volumes; however, CNC jobs that deal with large-scale projects and output require conventional machinery to be replaced with CNC for issues of volume, cost and accuracy.

Why is CNC so important?

Gone are the days when manual operation was enough for industry. Nowadays, manufacturing needs to operate more quickly, accurately and without operator fatigue or error. This is where CNC recruitment comes in.

Machines can now carry out tasks, which were impossible to perform manually, with motion control being the key commodity, allowing 2 or more programmable directions to work in a linear or rotary motion. In fact, multi-functional movement is what defines CNC machinery.

CBSbutler offers CNC jobs for programmers, operators and qualified professionals

Of course CNC machinery cannot operate exclusively and requires a human element to function – predominantly in the programming. Various CNC jobs exist within the sector:

On and Offline CNC Programmers Jobs - CNC programmes are created using CAD/CAM packages – typically by a degree qualified Manufacturing Engineers. These programmes are written offline and uploaded to the manufacturing environment where they are executed.

CNC programming jobs are also suitable for a time-served engineers who has worked their way up from the shop floor gaining on-the-job training and valuable experience throughout their career.

CNC Setter Jobs – A setter is responsible for placing the tooling, editing the programme and performing first-off component manufacture.

CNC Operator Jobs – Operators load and run component manufacture including inspection.

Case Study

One of our clients was recruiting for a CNC Cell Leader to manage a team of operators, setters and programmers.

This was a very demanding role, requiring knowledge of exceptionally accurate machinery and components. The successful candidate should have been someone with a niche skill-set and experience in vacuum pumps.

Having tried to recruit through other agencies, with no success, the client came to CBSbutler. Our dedicated team of CNC recruitment consultants were able to take a brief, advertise the role, source a candidate and have a permanent candidate starting with the client within 6 weeks.
