Software Manager required for technology and innovation leader specialising in defence, national security, and other government and commercial markets around the world. Key markets include Mission Systems Integration, Border Security, Network-Enabled Capabilities, Mission Support and Global Training Solutions.
As a trusted partner to the UK Ministry of Defence, our client designs, develops and manufactures a range of high technology electronic systems and software at its facilities in England, Scotland and Wales. It also is a major technology exporter to more than 40 countries, including the US.
The Defence Targeting Toolset (DTT) programme is a major element in my client's strategic development into the C2 business area. DTT is an n-tier distributed application using the J2EE framework. It is expected to comprise of 100+ user screens communicating to 10+ distributed services using both Ajax and Model View Controller mechanics.
Developers will take requirements from the web designer in the form of UI wireframes and Adobe Photoshop files using them to implement a pixel-perfect screen representation. The high and low level designs (described in UML) will inform the implementation when communicating with the back end services.
Job Information
We are seeking a Software Manager to provide technical leadership of the software engineering organisation of the DTT programme. The Software Manager will work closely with other groups such as system engineering, and provide leadership and direction to engineers. There are ample opportunities to grow professionally and to work with state-of-the-art technologies that are utilised on the programme, and in subsequent follow-on opportunities. The Software Manager will manage the development of the software team, including oversight of personnel and management of cost, schedule, and technical performance of the group.
The Software Manager is responsible for:
Providing leadership and direction of technical programme delivery. Working closely with the software development team to ensure that the development responds to the programme needs. Establishing strong relationships with the programmes customer, key stakeholders, subcontractors, and Raytheon US counterparts. Ensuring the consistent application of engineering best practice, all activities undertaken are to be conducted to common standards in accordance with relevant industry standards. Leading, managing, and mentoring a team of engineers to successfully design, develop, integrate, and deliver the programme.
Engineering input to the Formal Reviews and Gate Reviews. Establishing an effective communication network within the team, flowing down project goals and engineering commitments. Designing, developing, coding and unit testing each software element of the software architecture. Ensuring that all engineering requirements are managed effectively. Ensuring that all Engineering work products are configuration managed effectively. Estimation, planning and delivery of the engineering solution.
Education and Experience
Essential
*Degree in Scientific or Engineering discipline.
*Experience of leading, managing, and mentoring engineering teams.
*Proven and successful track record in managing the design and delivery of major system integration programmes.
*Experience of software development tasks on at least one major programme
Desirable
*Second degree in relevant subject.
*Experience of commercial and government IT Security environments and requirements.
Demonstrable Experience and Knowledge
*Experiences in the following areas are required:
*Provision of leadership, planning and analysis expertise.
*Deep understanding of the software development lifecycle, and demonstrable application of relevant methodologies and toolsets.
*Extensive software validation planning and implementation.
*Extensive knowledge and experience as Software Engineer with full lifecycle coverage.
*Reviewing proposals and technical specifications from subordinates and peers for feasibility, quality and effectiveness.
*Proven and successful track record in design and delivery of systems for major software intensive, system integration programmes.
*Experience of Cost Account Management including task estimation, project scheduling & budget management.
*Substantial experience using a JavaScript framework such as Dojo or JQuery.
*Core UI skills.
*Strong experience with the following:
*JavaScript, XHTML, CSS, JSON, XML, XSLT, JSP and Ajax
*Experience of the following is desirable:
*Google Web Toolkit, Spring MVC, Adobe Flex, JBoss, MySQL, SQL Server, ClearCase and Apache Maven.
*A broad understanding of RESTful Web Services.
*Proficient in UML 2.0 to describe design and model technical solutions where necessary.
