Web Front-End Developer
Web Front-End Developer required for technology and innovation leader specialising in defence, national security, and other government and commercial markets around the world. Key markets include Mission Systems Integration, Border Security, Network-Enabled Capabilities, Mission Support and Global Training Solutions.
As a trusted partner to the UK Ministry of Defence, our client designs, develops and manufactures a range of high technology electronic systems and software at its facilities in England, Scotland and Wales. It also is a major technology exporter to more than 40 countries, including the US.
The role :
My client is developing an n-tier distributed application using the J2EE framework. It is expected to comprise of 100+ user screens communicating to 10+ distributed services using both Ajax and Model View Controller mechanics.
Developers will take requirements from the web designer in the form of UI wireframes and Adobe Photoshop files using them to implement a pixel-perfect screen representation. The high and low level designs (described in UML) will inform the implementation when communicating with the back end services.
The UI architecture is based around the Dojo framework and JSP/Spring MVC. Using the Dojo publish/subscribe framework the developer will implement a consistent view of application data through multiple view portals. For each screen the developer will implement a suitable data retrieval strategy via Ajax or JSP depending on the requirement.
Regular review cycles will be held both internally (peer review) and externally with the customer to present designs, code and prototypes where necessary.
The developer will implement code, meeting agreed standards, using the agreed test framework. Once coding is complete, the developer will support the review, test, integration and sell-off activities of the component, as well as producing documentation where appropriate.
The Developer will:
* Code and Unit test user interface components and screens.
* Support the Integration, Test and Sell-Off of components.
* Attend formal project meetings and reviews.
* Work collaboratively within the team sharing ideas and experience with other members.
In addition, the Technical Lead will:
* Demonstrate excellence in technical design and implementation.
* Have a broad understanding of UI technologies including XHTML, CSS and JavaScript.
* Act as a mentor for team members.
* Be focussed on delivery timescales, highlighting risks and slippages appropriately.
* Demonstrate communication skills in both technical and non-technical disciplines.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
* Excellent core UI skills.
* Very strong experience with all of the following: JavaScript, XHTML, CSS, JSON, XML, XSLT, JSP and Ajax.
* Substantial experience using a JavaScript framework such as Dojo or JQuery.
DESIRABLE SKILLS
* Experience of the following is desirable: Google Web Toolkit (GWT)
* Experience of the following is also desirable: Spring MVC, Adobe Flex, JBoss, Java, J2EE, MySQL, SQL Server, ClearCase and Apache Maven.
* A broad understanding of RESTful Web Services.
* Proficient in UML 2.0 to describe design and model technical solutions where necessary.
* Excellent communication skills with the ability to present technical detail in an appropriate format.
* Experience in Integration and Test of Large Software Intensive Programmes preferable.
* Degree in a Scientific or Engineering discipline.
