The Engineer's 2017 Salary Survey

Davids' commentary reveals some interesting insight into the changing trends and attitudes people in engineering are experiencing, and it is quite apparent ‘that engineering and manufacturing still lag behind other industries such as oil and gas’. It is clear that pay levels have been tempered by concerns over skills and diversity.
The survey asked over 2,500+ engineers, some really important questions across different sectors of the UK industry, about their role and earnings and how they feel about their chosen careers. With the UK experiencing political tensions with the vote to leave the EU and most recently the general election, there is a real sense of uncertainty in the country.
The key findings for the survey are interesting and reflect how life has changed for engineers in the last 12 months. There generally appears dissatisfaction amongst respondents with the levels of remuneration offered across industries – with only 35% being happy with their pay. It is clear that a lot still needs to be addressed; if we are to attract new and fresh talent into the sector then we need to reignite the engineering salaries debate, and start investing in our young talent.
Key findings of the report include:
- Year on year average pay increase of 6.6 percent
- 45 per cent of respondents are considering a change in job
- 49 per cent would consider relocating overseas
- More than 1/3 respondents worried about impact of Brexit on job security
- Female engineers paid on average 10K less than their male colleagues.
