Criminal Check

DBS Checks: Disclosure & Barring Service (Previously CRB checks)

The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) have merged to become the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). CRB checks are now called DBS checks. DBS Checks are a helpful tool to enable employers make safe recruitment decisions and to prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups.


What is a DBS Check?


DBS clearance is required for posts that involve working with children or vulnerable adults. Standard Disclosures may also be issued for people entering certain professions, such as members of the legal and accountancy professions. Standard Disclosures contain the following: details of all convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings held on the Police National Computer (PNC);

There are 3 different levels of DBS Check
  1. Basic Disclosure: Available to be carried out by both individuals and employers, this is processed by a Government organisation called Disclosure Scotland and searches an applicant's criminal history for any ‘unspent convictions’. Please note; a Basic Disclosure is available for anybody living within the UK.

  2. Standard DBS Check: This form of check searches the applicant's criminal history for any cautions, warnings, reprimands and convictions (both spent and unspent). This level of check is only available for employers to obtain on behalf of their employees.

  3. Enhanced DBS Check: This level of DBS Check also searches the applicant's criminal history for any cautions, warnings, reprimands or convictions (both spent and unspent). Moreover, the Enhanced DBS Check also searches the children and vulnerable adults ‘barred lists’ to see if the applicant is barred from working with those groups. In addition to this information, all Enhanced DBS Disclosures involve an extra level of checking with your local police force records in addition to checks with the Police National Computer (PNC) and the government department lists held by the Department for Education and Skills and the Department of Health, where appropriate.
