Application Support Engineer (SQL)

£40,000 - £50,000 (dependent on experience)

Remote role - Occasional travel to London

Sc clearance required (Or willing to undergo)


This is an exciting opportunity to work on the support of a truly unique capability - NAS is understood to be the largest number plate recognition database in the world supporting UK Policing and Law Enforcement in the detection and prevention of serious crime. The system processes over 50 million vehicle movements per day, and holds a dataset of up to 60 billion records in what has been described to us as the largest Microsoft SQL Server instance in the UK.

Key Responsibility Areas:

  • Provide Microsoft SQL Server expertise for the Service team

  • Independently analyse, solve, and correct issues in real time, providing problem resolution end-to-end

  • Interact with customer/clients on a regular basis

  • Support test activities on the systems

  • Provide 24x7 support (on-call shift basis) for critical production systems

  • Progress Problems logged with the service desk

Required Skills:

  • Extensive experience supporting large scale data based applications.

  • Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server

  • Performance analysis and debugging

  • Measuring SQL server performance and suggesting evidence based improvements

  • Deadlock resolution

  • Compression analysis

  • Experience in AOAG (always on availability group)

  • Using SQL Server Profiler and extended events

  • Microsoft Windows Server

  • Scripting

  • Analysing event logs

  • Assessment of designs and test results

Desirable Skills:

  • Formal certification in Microsoft SQL Server technologies.

  • Linux (preferably Red Hat)

  • Understanding of C#

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft IIS

  • Able to communicate clearly and appropriately within the company and with customers

  • Drive & Commitment

  • Ability to follow process and improve it

  • A credible ambassador for Leonardo

  • Commercial awareness and business understanding

  • Capable of working independently and collaboratively.
