Materials Chemist (Contract)

A leading Aerospace and Defence organisation are seeking a Materials Chemist who will be responsible for the research, development and manufacture of materials to meet the demanding requirements of the company's products. These requirements include physical, chemical, thermal, erosion, mechanical and ballistic properties under extreme conditions of temperature, pressure, vibration and age.

Specific responsibilities include the following:

+ Developing associated insulants, inhibitors and adhesives.

+ Developing material manufacturing processes.

+ Qualifying materials for use in accordance with recognised standards.

+ Investigating and resolving material and processing problems.

+ Monitoring for obsolescence and qualifying replacements.

+ Quality assurance of ingredients and finished materials

For this role you should have a good first degree, masters or PhD in chemical or materials science subject. Ideally you should also have a good record in successful delivery of research or product development and some experience of working in a process scale up or manufacturing environment.

Relevant knowledge and experience may include the following:

+ Polymer chemistry.

+ Polymer blending and manufacturing processes.

+ Energetic and hazardous materials

+ Production process control and improvement techniques, e.g. SPC, Lean Sigma.

+ Safety practices, e.g. COSHH, MHDS.
