PIC Design Engineer - Laser & OptoElectronics Design

  • UK Based role
  • PIC - Photonic Integrated Circuit Design
  • £40,000 to £65,000 per annum dependant on experience
  • Fantastic benefits and bonus
  • Would suit a PhD Graduate with experience in OptoElectronics & PICs

As the successful candidate you will have the opportunity to design and verify advanced photonic integrated circuits and devices, specifically semiconductor laser, modulator and receiver devices, to enable the rapid and successful completion of chip NPI programmes.

What do we do?

Our client is a market-leading manufacturer of innovative optical and photonic products enabling optical networking and commercial laser customers worldwide. Lumentum's optical components and subsystems are part of virtually every type of telecom, enterprise, and data center network.

What Will You Do?

The PIC Design Engineer will be developing world-leading optical components for use in ultra-high data rate systems for cloud data centre, 5G mobile and coherent telecommunications optical fibre networks. You will need to work closely with other members of the laser, modulator and receiver design teams, as well as with members of the wider chip R&D community, the product engineering, test, reliability and process architect teams. You must be proactive and be able to work independently and under general supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Product development of new and improved photonic devices and photonic integrated circuits (PICs), for coherent detection and direct detection systems above 100 Gb/s.
  • Research and development of photonic III-V semiconductor device technologies, design methodologies, fabrication techniques and systems applications
  • Activities will include PIC device design & modelling (optical waveguides, semiconductor materials and physics, RF, and others), followed by experimental characterisation and performance investigation

This role requires advanced or expert engineering design experience and skill levels:

  • Specific experience of work in optics, optoelectronics, semiconductor technology, solid state physics, electronics or telecommunications.
  • PhD in physics, electronic, electrical engineering or a related discipline
  • Ability to use scientific and engineering reasoning in a wide range of situations
  • Specialized knowledge and skills in relevant areas (e.g. semiconductor device physics, design, testing, electronic design, software development).
  • Specific relevant areas of previous experience include semiconductor materials and devices, semiconductor lasers, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA), optical modulators, detectors, photonic integrated circuits (PIC), PIC design software, microwave/millimeter-wave RF, and 10/40/100G circuitry.
  • Optoelectronic component/wafer processing (desirable)
  • Knowledge of III-V wafer processing techniques (desirable)
