The Role:

An opportunity for a Semiconductor Laser (or Photonic Integrated Circuit PIC) R&D Manager to join the Chip R&D team. The successful candidate will have previously led a similar R&D team, or be an experienced laser (or photonic integrated circuit) R&D engineer looking for the next career step into leading a team. The opportunity is to lead and manage a team that is developing technology and executing product introduction projects on new semiconductor lasers for telecommunications and other applications.

JOB ROLE:

The role is to lead the team developing world-leading optical components for use in ultra-high data rate systems for cloud data centre, 5G mobile and coherent telecommunications optical fibre networks, and other applications. You will need to co-ordinate the semiconductor laser chip team work, collaborating closely with internal customers in other product development teams, the wafer fabrication facility, and reliability/test teams. You must be proactive within a global R&D organisation

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

+ Lead a team of laser designers, designing fixed wavelength and tunable lasers for use in telecommunications systems and other applications

+ Introduce new lasers into production in internal Indium Phosphide (InP) wafer fab, and give engineering support during full product lifecycle.Confirm performance and manufacturability of the lasers.

+ Communicate effectively between the chip development team and wafer fab and internal customer (module and components product development team)

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential Skills:

+ Management of a highly skilled BSc & PhD level engineering team, building the team with existing experienced and enhancing new members.

+ Running engineering projects in combination with a program manager

+ Strong background in physics, electronic/electrical engineering, semiconductor materials or a related discipline

+ Semiconductor device design and modelling

Preferred

+ Semiconductor laser design (Tunable lasers and DFBs)

+ Device models (Commercial software and ability to write in-house custom software)Performance measurements

Or

+ Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) design

-Waveguides

-Gratings

-iii-v semiconductor materials

Alternatively

+ Design of other compound semiconductor devices, optical or electrical (where deep knowledge of physics and materials has been required.)

+ Design for manufacturability and reliability

+ Coaching and guiding other designers on these activities

+ High knowledge level of iii-v semiconductor fabrication processes, including statistical data techniques

+ A proven record in new product introduction of semiconductor chips, including on-time product release, DFx, and high quality.
