As a Software Development manager, you will be managing the full life cycle of the project including but not limited to the planning, estimating and execution of programmes of systems development work to time, budget and quality targets. You will be identifying the resources needed for systems development and how this will be met with an effective supply capacity, aligning systems development activity and deliverables with agreed architectures and standards.

The successful candidate will have a strong Software Development background as well as extensive management experience. You will be managing a team of developers overseeing UK and international projects, this role will provide you with the opportunity to work within a new team within maritime services, giving you the exposure to grow your skills and progress within the company.

Your main responsibilities as a Software Development manager will involve:

  • Defining systems development projects which support the organisation's objectives and plans

  • Adapting appropriate systems development methods, tools and techniques selecting appropriately from predictive (plan-driven) approaches or adaptive (iterative/agile) approaches

  • Ensuring that senior management is both aware of and able to provide the required resources

  • Monitoring and reporting on the progress of development projects, ensuring that projects are carried out in accordance with agreed architectures, standards, methods and procedures (including secure software development)

  • Developing road maps to communicate future development activity

  • Assisting with the collection of safety assurance evidence, undertaking all work in accordance with agreed safety, technical and quality standards, using appropriate methods and tools

  • Design, create, control and evaluate moderately-complex subject matter ensuring the needs of the audience(s) are met

  • Making informed decisions about the best way to present information to an audience, taking into consideration how information may be presented, identified, and searched for

  • Producing information artefacts that are accurate, current, relevant and easily understood

Your skills and qualifications:

  • Extensive Technology Management experience acquired through a career in software development, Application development or similar technical discipline

  • Demonstrable exposure and grasp of the latest technology, software and architecture trends and practical application of these in the resolution of business problems

  • Track record in leading the successful development of in-house, out-sourced and blended solutions and products

  • Experience of managing large multi-disciplined, geographically disparate teams, including mentoring, career development, objectives setting and annual appraisals

  • Agile qualification or hands on experience working in a complex agile environment

  • Degree in an IT related sector or hands on experience working within software development

  • Experience and knowledge working within the defence industry this inclusive of UK defence and international MOD's
