Our Exciting Journey

Lots of highs, some lows but plenty of success

With impressive year-on-year sales growth since a management buy-out in 2003, CBSbutler has consistently ranked high in the ‘Hot 100’ performance league of recruitment firms. Being a multi-award winner, CBSbutler enjoys an excellent industry reputation - the brand being synonymous with technical specialism. As an entrepreneurial, well-funded company we have ambitious expansion plans - investing in new ventures and driving our international presence.

In July the entire CBSbutler team took over the Roof Gardens, Kensington to celebrate their tenth anniversary...

And was there a lot to celebrate!

A decade of successes, some tough challenges and plenty of notable achievements shared by a group of like-minded people who all shared a  common vision.

From the start, the aim was to build a quality brand focusing on technical niches with an emphasis in engineering. We also recognised that a reasonable amount of diversification, both sector and geographical, would be important in combating cyclical demand and reducing risk.

Our Chairman David Leyshon remarked, "from the start, the aim was to build a quality brand focusing on technical niches with an emphasis in engineering. Contract business is at the core of our business and makes up the majority of revenues, while permanent fee income delivers bottom line and strategic value. Using this template we were able to launch a sustainable growth plan."

Within six months of the buy-out, Butler International (UK) acquired CBS Appointments — a long standing south-coast recruiter specialising in the electronics, defence and aerospace sectors. The merged companies then rebranded and CBSbutler was born.

Industry recognition

Today, we have established ourselves as a leading technical recruiter with four separate operating companies in the UK, Germany and Qatar. What sets the company apart from our industry peers is our impressive array of recognition and awards. In particular 'Best Engineering Recruiter' in six out of the last seven years — clear proof that we aren't a 'flash in the pan' and an undeniable testament to our longevity.

Moreover in 2013 the company received two more prestigious awards for client service, competing against recruitment companies from all sectors and sizes. Not to be forgotten, we've also been named Surrey company of the year and APSCo company of the year in recent times. In the 'Employer stakes', the company attained number 37 in the 'Sunday Times Top 100 companies to work for in 2012'. Indeed, CBSbutler has been recognised as 'Best Recruitment firm to work for' by one of the leading magazines in each of the last three years. It also holds the coveted 'Best Companies' three star' rating for employee engagement which few recruitment firms have attained.

The future
So what's ahead for CBSbutler?

These are extremely exciting times for the company. Our investment in high-demand, international markets combined with an infrastructure for compliant trading will position us strongly for growth over the next few years. This combined with proven talent in key positions is a distinct competitive advantage.

CBSbutler has always believed in building its growth strategy around its customer — aligning itself to clients' global projects and new ventures. This is also a relatively low risk method as revenue streams are already in existence to fund start-ups — whether that be new desks or full operating offices. Notably, CBSbutler has never been one to 'jump on the band wagon' and be influenced by market 'hype'.

Importantly, the company prides itself in being innovative with its clients in order to drive value and competitive advantage. Our account strategies have always been led by the client's business needs and problems. For example, we have modified the use of contingent labour and the traditional time sheet method to deliver scope of work projects in recent times. Many recruiters would shy away from this but it is our belief that we need to raise the value stakes and avoid commoditising our offerings.
