Data Engineer

Telford / Hybrid - 2 days per week onsite

£465 per day inside IR35

6 months

We are currently looking for an experienced Data Engineer to join a major public sector programme in Telford.

The role sits within a Data Acquisition Team, responsible for ingesting, integrating and transforming data from a wide range of sources into a strategic SAS-based platform. The data supports high-impact programmes across HMRC, including Making Tax Digital (MTD), Income Tax Self Assessment (ITSA) and risk-based initiatives.

Essential: Pentaho, Talend or Denodo

You must have hands-on commercial experience with at least ONE of the following:

  • Pentaho
  • Talend
  • Denodo

Experience with more than one would be highly advantageous.

We are particularly interested in Data Engineers who have worked extensively with ETL, data integration, data virtualisation and complex data pipelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and deploy data integration and transformation solutions.
  • Build and maintain scalable data pipelines and services.
  • Work with technologies including Pentaho, Talend, Denodo and SAS.
  • Develop efficient SQL queries and data models.
  • Collaborate with technical and business stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver robust data solutions.
  • Work within an Agile/Scrum delivery environment.
  • Implement DevOps and CI/CD practices across data engineering solutions.
  • Troubleshoot complex data issues and resolve performance bottlenecks.
  • Ensure data quality, governance and security requirements are maintained.
  • Contribute to automated testing and deployment.
  • Provide technical guidance and knowledge sharing to other members of the team.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong commercial experience in Data Engineering / Data Integration.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one of: Pentaho, Talend or Denodo - ESSENTIAL.
  • Strong SQL skills.
  • Experience designing and developing ETL/data integration pipelines.
  • Good understanding of data modelling and database technologies.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.
  • Understanding of DevOps and CI/CD practices.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Desirable

  • Experience with multiple technologies from Pentaho, Talend, Denodo and SAS.
  • Experience with SAS for data processing, analytics or reporting.
  • Jenkins, Git, Docker and/or Kubernetes experience.
  • Experience with automated testing and deployment.
  • Previous experience working on government or large-scale public sector programmes.
  • Experience working with sensitive or regulated data.
  • Previous technical leadership or mentoring experience.
